Background of the Study

Sex education is a critical component of adolescent development, aimed at equipping students with knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their health and relationships. In Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, sex education programs in secondary schools have sparked considerable debate regarding their content, delivery, and cultural appropriateness (Etim, 2023). Students’ perceptions of these programs are influenced by factors such as cultural values, religious beliefs, and social norms (Okon, 2024). While some view sex education as essential for promoting safe behaviors and reducing risky activities, others remain skeptical about its implementation in a conservative societal context. Recent studies highlight the importance of tailoring sex education to align with local cultural sensitivities while addressing the critical needs of adolescents (Akanbi, 2025). This study aims to appraise students’ perceptions of sex education, examining their attitudes, understanding, and acceptance of the curriculum. The research integrates quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to capture a comprehensive picture of student perspectives, thereby contributing to informed educational policy reforms.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized benefits of comprehensive sex education, students in Uyo Local Government Area express mixed perceptions regarding its relevance and effectiveness (Etim, 2023). Cultural and religious influences often result in skepticism and resistance towards the content and methods of delivery (Okon, 2024). The lack of contextually appropriate curriculum materials further exacerbates these challenges, leading to gaps in knowledge and misinformation. This study seeks to explore the underlying factors shaping students’ perceptions of sex education and to assess the impact of these perceptions on their health-related behaviors (Akanbi, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess students’ perceptions of sex education in secondary schools.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of current sex education programs.

3. To recommend improvements for culturally sensitive sex education.

Research Questions:

1. What are students’ attitudes towards sex education in Uyo?

2. How do cultural and religious factors influence these perceptions?

3. What changes can be made to enhance the effectiveness of sex education programs?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Students’ perceptions of sex education are significantly influenced by cultural factors.

2. Positive perceptions of sex education are associated with better health-related behaviors.

3. Curriculum adjustments improve students’ acceptance of sex education.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides insights into the factors influencing students’ perceptions of sex education in Uyo. The findings will inform the development of culturally sensitive curricula, enhance health education, and promote informed decision-making among adolescents. This research is vital for policy reform and the improvement of adolescent health outcomes (Etim, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

The study is limited to evaluating students’ perceptions of sex education in secondary schools in Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. It does not include other stakeholders or regions.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Sex education: Instruction on human sexuality, including reproductive health and safe practices.

2. Perception: The way in which individuals interpret and understand information.
